National Mathematics Week was celebrated from 2 to 6 August. AMESA (The Association for Mathematics Education in South Africa) Eastern Cape embarked on activities for all phase levels during this week that taking place at the Missionvale Campus of the NMMU in Port Elizabeth.




National Mathematics Week was celebrated from 2 to 6 August. AMESA (The Association for Mathematics Education in South Africa) Eastern Cape embarked on activities for all phase levels during this week that taking place at the Missionvale Campus of the NMMU in Port Elizabeth.

Foundation Phase to FET Phase level teachers and learners were engaged in mathematical games, problem solving activities, maths talks, quizzes, relays and various mathematics content development sessions.

The event was sponsored by SAMF, the South African Mathematics Foundation. Mrs Lise Westaway (Rhodes Education Department and Treasurer of AMESA EC) and Ms Zonia Jooste (RUMEP and Chairperson of AMESA Grahamstown Branch) presented the mathematical games sessions for Foundation and Intermediate Phase teachers and learners.

 

Mrs Westaway and Ms Jooste also presented the mathematical games session to grade 5 learners at Good Shepherd Primary School as part of the Grahamstown National Mathematics Week celebrations.

The mathematics teacher, Mr Jonathan Hellermann, who completed the PGCE at Rhodes in 2009 and three current PGCE students on teaching practice at this school assisted with the facilitation of the games in the various groups of learners.

The games involved concept development of common fractions, space and shape, number and multiplication, division problem solving and investigation skills, etc. Best performing learners were awarded prizes.
