Perfect sunny conditions welcomed the contestants on day one of the Quiksnow South African Nationals
Snowboarding Champs at Afriski ski and mountain resort in Lesotho.

The champs took place from 1 to 4 August, and local Rhodes University student, Bradley Stephenson took part in the event.

Stephenson was named the Rhodes University Sportman of the Year last year for his snowboarding performances.

The Giant Slalom event was the main competitive feature on Monday. This discipline demands high speed and control as Snowboarders weave in between poles on a downhill stretch for the best time.

There were over 30 entrants in the Giant Slalom event. Grahamstown snowboarder, Bradley Stephenson, was placed second in South Africa for the Giant Slalom race at Afriski in Lesotho.

He was marginally beaten by his coach Alex Heath but was very happy with his time. In his first run, Stephenson finished in 26.08 seconds, and 26.45 in the second run with a combined time of 52.53. Heath won and finished in a combined time of 50.66.
