An old toilet is bound to cause a stink. But so, too, is the cellphone chat site with the same name.

Outoilet is responsible for a great deal of emotional pain and social ruin for many of its users and those who live among them.

Relationships are terminated, individuals are ridiculed and some people are even marked as gang targets thanks to Outoilet.

“A lot of it is lies and speculation,” Franklyn Abrahams said. Whether there are falsehoods propagated on the site or not, many people are taking what they read on Outoilet very seriously.

“People will write anything on there to try and disgrace someone’s name,” Gurshan Human says.  Using a hypothetical example, Human says that if he was to get a job as a petrol attendant, where he could make an honest living, people would post disparaging comments on the chat site.  People will try to “break each other down” Human says. It is the fear of reprisal and ridicule that makes many reluctant to participate and feature on the site.

Lennox Groeneberg revealed that his sister and brother-in-law are temporarily separated because of a rumour spread on the internet. Fortunately for them, their relationships was strong enough to overcome the pervasive stench of Outoilet.

Outoilet is a Russian website whose South African users communicate largely in colloquial Afrikaans. Human says it is widely used by Coloured communities because they are very close-knit and everyone knows each other. "We don't say good things about each other," says Abrahams.

One man who did not want to be named said that if a man is inclined to get with lots of different sexual partners, people who might be jealous of him will spread rumours of him being HIV positive. This source, much like others spoken to, did not want to be named because of the fear of becoming a target of vicious rumour on this chat site.
