Preparation for the matric trial examinations commenced on Monday, with Nombulelo High and Nathaniel Nyaluza Secondary School being the two centres that will be giving extra lessons to Grade 12 learners in the Grahamstown district.

This programme of extra lessons is organised by the district office of the Department of Education and will run for three weeks.

It is hoped that this will improve the matric pass rate of disadvantaged township schools. Chief Education Specialist, Bongani Stamper says: “On Monday at both centres Physical Science was the main focus.

Next week it will be accounting and the other week mathematics,” he said. All the extra lessons start after school from 2.30 till 4.30pm.

Nathaniel Nyaluza will only accommodates Grade 12 learners from their school and Mary Waters High School because of the large number of learners at both schools.

Stamper said, "Other schools can meet at the Nombulelo Secondary School centre.” Vuyani Zandani, who is a Senior Programme Coordinator for Community Engagement at Rhodes University said that they also offer a tutoring programme “which is a support programme for Grade 10 to 12 learners at the university on Saturday mornings from 9 to 12pm”.
