This week was Health Care Week at Rhodes University. The university’s health centre and clinic is promoting “healthy lifestyles for one goal” with the purpose of creating health awareness among Rhodes students and staff.

“Health awareness means being aware of how your body looks and feels and what is normal for you and to notice any changes,” says Sister Heather Ferreira, the health centre manager.

Topics that were discussed included mental health, measles, chronic illness, nutrition, health statistics and reproductive health.

There was also a stall on physical health and nutrition and talks on different topics took place daily at 3pm in the health centre.

Guest speakers included Claris Magadza, a pharmacist from the Rhodes Pharmacy department and Pumla Harmans of the Grahamstown District Health Office.

“Our duty at the health centre is to inform and educate the Rhodes community about health issues, if they don’t hear it from us, where are they going to hear it from?” asked Ferreira.

She added that many health problems can be prevented. “We don’t want to be a reactive health centre, being proactive is what we hope to do,” she said.
