Music, fashion, cocktails, and prizes are a few of the things to look forward to at the Grahamstown City Hall for a Women’s Day celebration on 9 August.

Local business women Jenfred Engelbrecht moved to Grahamstown four years ago and says she hasn’t previously witnessed an independent open-for-all Women’s Day celebration in the city, prompting her to arrange such a celebration.

"I’d heard of some individual church events but never about a day’s event dedicated to women from all backgrounds in the community. This event is for all women, irrespective," Engelbrecht said.

Engelbrecht is owner of The Marquee, an event planning, catering and décor company. Originally from Cape Town, Engelbrecht said women need to be reminded about how important and special they are. Engelbrecht said she chose the theme, Women of Worth, because women should be respected, valued and celebrate their womanhood.

The main speaker for the event is Merle Hendricks, who runs a home for female ex-prisoners of Polsmoor prison.  There will be music, praise and worship, a fashion show by local models and designers, give aways, and prize giving.

"Women will also have an opportunity to take pictures with a crown on their head so that they can feel like the queens they are," said an enthused Engelbrecht. She emphasized that the event is open to anyone who is interested.

"All women from all backgrounds and the special men in their lives are welcome." The entrance fee is R100 for adults, R50 for students and R80 for students. There will be a five-course meal.  "Ladies can dress however they feel, after all this will be their day," she said.

Ten percent of the proceeds from the event will go towards a woman’s charity in Grahamstown. Engelbrecht expressed gratitude to Spur, Curves and Pep Stores for their contributions towards the event.
