Motorists who were travelling along Raglan Road on Tuesday afternoon were caught by surprise by a road block, set up to check for stolen vehicles, drugs, licences and road-worthiness.
Superintendent Nel said that two arrests were made: one was for contravention of a protection order and one was for dagga possession.
Superintendent Nel said that they issued 20 traffic fines during the roadblock. The roadblock annoyed motorists because traffic fines were issued no matter how apologetic they were. Some started shouting at the police, saying that what they were doing was wrong, when they noticed their apologetic stunts were not working.
The motorists who were caught driving without their licences were not allowed to continue driving even after the fines were issued to them.
One of the drivers who was caught driving with out a licence said: “I am poor and my family is poor, I cannot afford this traffic fine you are giving me.”
The fine for a driver without a licence is R700. And for those who have licences but fail to produce them on demand it is R500, payable at the traffic department.
