This week’s Rhodes University Sports Personality nominee is Amy Jane (AJ) Elkington. Elkington has been playing hockey since she was about five years old.

She currently plays for the Rhodes Hockey Club’s first women’s team and has played for the first team since 2005, and “has loved every second of it”.

This year Elkington joined the committee and has become the head of development hockey. This project helps three underprivileged schools around Grahamstown with hockey.

Elkington feels the sport helps the children not only on the field but off the field as well. “We don’t only teach them the skills to use on the field, but we teach them the spirit of hockey; the part of hockey that brings people together, and allows them to  understand how to work as a team and to rely on others to achieve a goal”.

Elkington loves the sport and plays because “the game brings you close to people and I have met my best friends through this great game”.

The Rhodes Sports Personality of the Year, sponsored by PG Glass, will be announced on 12 August.
