In Grahamstown, the Albany Museum is busy collecting donations of any kind. These will be delivered to two needy schools in the area on 23 July, so all donations are welcome until the day before that date.

The Grahamstown SPCA also appeals to all Grahamstown residents for donations of cat or dog food, or if you’re wanting to lend a helping hand, then why not volunteer to walk the dogs?

Kingswood Junior is also doing their bit by teaching the learners about Nelson Mandela’s legacy in their Friday assembly, and then on Sunday they will be celebrating Madiba’s birthday by baking a cake for the boarders and singing Happy Birthday to commemorate the day.

St Andrews Preparatory is doing a cleanup, to make the road leading into Grahamstown from the Bedford/Cradock side look neater and more welcoming.

They will be cleaning up around the Grahamstown stables and along the main road leading into Grahamstown from Bedford.

This will be done from 2 to 3pm on Sunday so those who want to help are more than welcome to join in. Victoria Girls’ Primary School is also collecting donations of toiletries and  nonperishables from parents and students.

These donations will be packaged and delivered to the Raphael centre for HIV/Aids in Grahamstown. If you feel you want to do something for your community here are a few great ideas:

•Organise a litter cleanup day in your area.
•Read to someone who can’t. Visit a local home for the blind and open up a new world for someone else.
•Help out at the local animal shelter. Dogs without homes still need a walk and a bit of love.

•Find out from your local library if it has a story hour and offer to read to the children.
•Get in touch with your local HIV organisations and find out how you can help.

•Take a bag full of toys to a local hospital that has a children’s ward.
•Buy a few blankets, or grab the ones you no longer need from home and give them to someone in need.
•Clean out your cupboard and donate the clothes you no longer wear to someone who needs them.

•Organise to clean up your local park, river, beach, street, town square or sports grounds with a few friends.

Our children deserve to grow up in a clean and healthy environment. For more great ideas on
