Makana Municipality was recently granted R150 000 by the Cacadu District Municipality to develop a Small, Micro and Medium Enterprise (SMME) Support Plan for tourism.

Last month’s progress report on the SMME plan stated that the plan will aim to tackle a number of issues such as reviewing the practical challenges faced by the tourism SMME sector and proposed interventions; identification of possible opportunities for development of SMMEs through ongoing industry business, events and festivals and through partnerships with established tourism products; and creating a database of all tourism SMMEs in Makana.

A minimum of three projects or interventions that include business plans with associated costs are envisaged to be implemented immediately by Makana Municipality and its partners.

Local Economic Development Director Riana Meiring explained that this forms part of the specifications for the development of the plan.

“The successful bidder [service provider]will among other things do this as part of the deliverables,” Meiring said.

Suitable service providers were invited to submit proposals to develop the Makana Tourism SMME plan in May, but according to Meiring, the proposals received this month quoted prices way above the budget for this project. The tender then was re-advertised with a reduced scope of work last week.
