Ubom! has done it again, producing their second award winning production this year. With Rhodes  graduates on and off stage, the university can be proud of this homegrown, Eastern Cape theatre company.

Ubom’s latest Arts Festival offering is directed by Janet Buckland, features Andrew Buckland and was originally conceived by Ubom’s resident director, Brink Scholtz.

It stars company member Tshego Khutsoane and totals five Rhodes alumni involved in creating one of the top-grossing productions on this year’s National Arts Festival fringe, Breed.

At a National Arts Festival ceremony on 4 July, Festival Director Ismail Mahomed and veteran arts writer Adrienne Sichel announced Breed as a Silver Standard Bank Ovation Award winner.

A newly launched award, it recognises “artistic innovation, excellence, the exploration of new performance styles and the courage to open new conversations through the arts” according to the
festival newspaper, Cue.

Breed scooped up the award alongside other Festival favourites: London Road and Karoo Moose, proving Ubom! to be amongst the best South African theatre has to offer.

The play tells a story of two worlds that collide in a darkly comic story of desperation and loss. A beautiful score enhances the intriguing story, while moving performances from the strong cast and theatre stalwart Andrew Buckland will leave audience members thoughtfully unsettled.

Breed is powerful, hilarious, believable, clever, and – most importantly – relevant. The production will be staged for one night only at the Rhodes Main Theatre, on Wednesday, 21 July at 7pm, as part of the Rhodes Drama Department’s Best of Fest programme.

Tickets will be on sale from 20 July at Theatre Café or contact Kate Bold on 046 603 8542 for block bookings. Tickets cost R10 for Drama students, R15 for students and R20 for adults.

Age restriction +10 VL. For more information on Ubom! and Breed, contact Sarah Roberson on 046 603 8771 or s.robeson@ru.ac.za and Facebook Ubom! or visit www. ubom.co.za Ubom!
