This week’s PG Glass Rhodes University Sports Personality nominee is Anesu Chingono. Chingono has been part of the Rhodes Soccer Club for the past four years.

Team mates describe him as a “beacon for Rhodes soccer”. Chingono says, “My love for football began when I was six years old, sitting on a couch watching grown men on television run after a round, leathery object.”

He has, in the past, captained the first team, and currently holds the position. He is on the club’s committee as the media officer and has won numerous awards along the way, including, in 2007, being voted as the Rhodes Young Player of the Year.

Chingono has a positive outlook not only on life but on the soccer field as well. “He is a strong character with a mission to strive for the best in all that he does – motivating and encouraging others along the way.” says one of his peers.

Chingono says his love for soccer is expressed through this quote, “Soccer isn’t a matter of life and death, and it’s much more than that.”

This year’s winners will be anounced at the Sports Personality of the Year evening, held in the Old Mutual Pavilion Lounge in the Sports Admin building on Thursday, 12 August.
