Illegal dumping has become a serious problem in the eNcakeni area in Fingo Village where local dump site is not being used properly.

Residents living in the Victoria Road area are saying that the municipality does not collect the rubbish regularly or clean the container at the dumpsite, so they have resorted to dumping the rubbish outside and around the container.

Makana Communications Officer, Thandy Matebese, agreed that this is a problem. However, he said the container provided has to be adequately filled up before it  can be emptied and cleaned and dumpsites are cleaned up only if they pose a health risk to the community.

In addition, Matebese said that as a result of the National Arts Festival there has been an increase in the garbage load and certain areas are prioritised over others, but communities are notified of changes in the garbage collection schedule.

He said that this may be why with the garbage hasn’t been collected at the Victoria Road dumpsite recently. Matebese urged the community to utilise the container provided properly.

“The municipality are concerned with the cleanliness of Makana and Grahamstown at large, however the community and the municipality have a responsibility to work together to ensure Grahamstown is clean,” he said.
