The audience could feel the vibrations from the stage as trumpet player and flugel hornist Fezile Feya Faku gave his all at the DSG Hall last week.
Born in New Brighton in Port Elizabeth, Feya started playing music without any formal training. He has regularly spent time in Europe, stretching his harmonic concepts while performing and recording with leading Dutch and Swiss musicians.
One of those he met in his travels is Swiss pianist Malcolm Braff, who shared the stage with him alongside multiple award winning Swiss trombonist Samuel Blaser, Marc Duby on bass guitar and Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner for music, Kesivan Naidoo on drums.
This collaboration gave complex melodies with continuous rhythmic sounds that shifted subtly. In the beginning a cluster of rhythms was played with a crescendo of staccato.
Feya gave an excellent performance on his trumpet, displaying a delicate, smooth yet on point sound whereas Blaser had a more rough sound.
Faku managed to get the audience’s attention with his fresh approach to harmonic improvisation. Everyone sat in silence as Braff slipped his fingers along the piano, creating pure tunes, with Naidoo’s inspired drumming adding a unique and soulful voice to the ensemble.
