His passion for driving is evident, even from the back of the room, as he entertains his students with quips about snails overtaking one another along the road.

Jan Strydom has been driving since he was seven years old. Today he is the founding owner of Pronto Driving School in Grahamstown where he shares hislove for driving with  others.

He also gives free learner’s licence classes every Monday evening at 7pm at the Frontier Country Hotel. A handful of hopefuls turned up for the first lesson since its inception four months ago the number of students has grown steadily as more people hear about the classes.

Strydom’s philosophy is simple. Be in control of the car. He says, “When you are not in control of your car, you become a murderer.”

He believes if drivers read, understand and obey the road signs there will never be accidents caused by negligent  driving.

The free learner’s lessons last about an hour, and towards the end Strydom encourages his students to make an appointment for the learner’s licence test.

He applauds them for taking the first step, and says they must now “take it on a roll” as the process of learning to drive is set in motion.

Strydom guarantees a 100% pass, in fact, he believesso strongly in his classes that he promises to pay for the next appointment should someone fail their test.
