Before the tour kicked off in Namibia, the PJ tour group took part in an organised tour through Newlands Rugby Stadium.
The day before the tour the rugby side had the once in a lifetime opportunity to take part in a practice session in Windhoek with Hakkies Husselman, former national coach of Namibia and former scrumhalf for Griquas.
While the final results may not be that flattering, Cronje believes the tour was a team building effort and the school plans to player in a higher league and against bigger schools next year.
PJ’s 1st team hockey, netball and rugby sides took part in the 12 day tour, which saw the school taking part in the Dawin FNB sports tournament in Windhoek, Namibia.
The tournament was held over three days with the school’s hockey, netball and rugby sides being one of the only schools to play on each of the three days.
A number of private schools from South Africa, including Kingswood College from Grahamstown, also took part in the tour, as well as Namibian schools. In total, the tour consisted of 50 players and 16 supporters.
Two days were spend on the Orange River with Amanzi Trails, which Cronjé says was the educational highlight of the tour for many of the pupils as they got to canoe along the Orange River.
The PJ tour started on Wednesday 2 June with a flight on Kulula from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. From Cape Town the touring squad travelled to Namibia with two luxury coaches from Western Province coaches.
They then travelled back to Cape Town by bus on 12 June, before flying to PE the following day. Once back at school after the school holidays, the tour will be incorporated into the learning programme.
“Thanks to the wonderful community of Grahamstown for all their support tremendous help from our local businesses and community,” said Cronje.
Results from the Dawin FNB tournament: Netball PJ lost to Centraal of Beaufort West 9-20 on the first day, before meeting Westerford on the second day.
PJ lost 13-22. In their final match, against Walvis Bay, PJ lost 14-26. Hockey The 1 st hockey side met Windhoek on the 1st day of the tournament, going down 0-3.
The following day they met Walvisbay, losing 0-2, before losing 0-2 to St George’s on the final day. Rugby The PJ 1sts vs Windhoek rugby side.
PJ played their second team and went down 8-20. They then lost to Moria by 13-23 on the second
day, before drawing 10-10 to Windhoek on the final day.
