Two local rugby clubs, Winter Rose and Swallows met in an Eastern Province Super League Wellman Harmse fixture at the Albany Sports Club last Saturday.

Winter Rose were first to cross the try line to score a converted try, before Swallows replied with a try of their own when centre Hilton Fillis cut through the defence to score. Brian Goliath converted this to level the score at 7-7.

But then Winter Rose took the lead again shortly before halftime with a successful drop goal, making it a 10-7 lead.

Fifteen minutes into the second half saw Swallows leveling the scores once again with a drop goal of their own.

Swallows were awarded a penalty kick which got Swallows into the lead for the first time in the match. The kick was successful and Swallows took a 13-10 lead.

In the dying minutes of the second half Winter Rose put over a drop goal which saw the sides level once again, at 13-13, and this is how the score stayed until the final whistle.

The Willman Harmse fixtures will resume again on 24 July. The second round of the Mayoral Cup competition will start from 19 June with Swallows meeting another Grahamstown side, Easterns at Albany Sports Club.

Winter Rose travel to Alicedale to take on St Marks. In the other results between the two sides; Swallows seconds beat Winter Rose 2nds 28-0 and Winter Rose 1st reserves beat their Swallows counterparts 28-14.
