The debut of of the raunchy, edgy Ma Lindi: Sex Strike at the Arts Festival this year is an all-African sex comedy that is bound to fill the gap for a different kind of show.

Written and directed by Phyllis Klotz, the show incorporates extraordinary African costumes created by resident Market Theatre designer Thando Lobese with an occasional spat of witty opera.

This comedy adopts elements of the Greek playwright Aristophanes’ original play Lysistrata, but creates a unique exposé for intermingled contemporary African culture, live music, dance and singing, to present a work which is both universal and very ‘now’.

Klotz says “It carries a 15 age restriction, and I believe we have finally been able to deliver to the Festival an adult night-time show of dinner, dance, a ripping play, a journey and a fun exploration of the deep, dark and hysterical sexual games we all play. People will see themselves reflected.

It’s how we got here and how we love it!” Klotz says there is a fascinating complexity and depth to the play, which features a cast of 25 Sibikwa Art Centre players, consisting of wellknown TV stars and stage personalities.

“It’s a spoof, but technically, in terms of opera, it’s right up there. “It’s original, and it appeals to all – it splices the divides of race, class, gender and nation.”

Taking the lead roles in Ma Lindi: Sex Strike are Elton Landrew and Kabelo Thai. Klotz emphasises that the performance is neither crass nor pornographic but simply hilarious. The  performance will be held at the Rec Hall at 7pm from 21 June to 23 June.
