Candidates have to study a published work and then answer two  questions in a three hour exam. In order to excel, candidates must have a thorough knowledge of the text, and be able to apply this knowledge in a creative and original manner.

This year over 6300 candidates from 300 schools in South Africa and neighbouring countries wrote the Olympiad. St Andrew’s College enjoyed exceptional results, with four boys being placed in the top 100.

Only two other schools had more pupils in their top 100. Declan Williamson and Alexander Minney were placed between 50th and 100th position. Graham McNaughton and Taylor Spears were placed in the top 50.
