In anticipation for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, Kingswood College recently held a celebration for the preprimary children.
In true festive manner, Kingswood decided to combine this event with their annual Father’s Day celebration, due to the change in their term calender.
The head of the pre-primary department, Jill Long, felt it was the appropriate thing to do as Father’s Day would now fall during their holidays.
The event, held last Friday, involved grouping fathers and their children into teams with the children’s ages ranging from three to six years.
The children patriotically wore colourful shirts decorated with soccer balls, while the fathers wore the same colours as their aspiring athletes.
The evening’s festivities involved their pre-primary pupils playing against one another on Kingswood’s smaller field, while the mothers cheered them on from the sidelines.
Long says, “the event was held under floodlights which made it especially exciting for the children”. Following the soccer matches, the children were treated to a jumping castle and hot dogs while the parents retired to a steak evening and a glass of wine.
Long says the feedback was fantastic and the parents thoroughly enjoyed it. But the fathers who played against each other on the larger field remained terribly competitive.
The event served to promote unity within the parent body and among the children, and was a successful family occasion overall. “The bottom line was to have fun and to get to know one another, it was a lovely get together,” says Long.
