THE South African Duathlon Championships took place in Bloemfontein last Saturday, with a number of locals performing well at the event.

THE South African Duathlon Championships took place in Bloemfontein last Saturday, with a number of locals performing well at the event.

St Andrew’s College pupil Matthew Archer and Rhodes University student Natalie Ross represented Eastern Province, while Michael Cannon (Rhodes) represented the Amathole Province.

Junior athletes (16 to 19 years) took part in the sprint event (5km run, 20km cycle and 2.5km run) while senior age groupers covered the Olympic distance (10km run, 40km cycle and 5km run).

Ross finished fourth in the female 20 to 24 age group in a total time of 2:29:41 (43:22 run, 1:23:30 cycle and 22:49 run).

Cannon was placed ninth in the 25 to 29 age category with his time of 2:19:10 (36:43 run, 1:23:25 cycle, 19:02 run). Matthew Archer, competing in the males 16 to 19 category, finished 13th in 1:07:24 (19:43 run, 37:12 cycle and 10:29 in the run).
