Scooters Pizza opened its doors in Grahamstown on Tuesday in the newly renovated area of Pepper Grove Mall.

The new store will be the franchise’s 128th to open nation-wide since its inception 10 years ago in KwaZulu-Natal.

The first Scooters Pizza in the Eastern Cape opened in Port Elizabeth in 2001. According to Marketing Manager Riaan van den Berg the franchise has managed to open each of its many stores within a period of only 27 days.

The opening of the pizza outlet might spark business tension with competition around town. Van den Berg says: “It’s always a great feeling to find an opportunity to broaden and reach out to other areas of the country.

“Our goal is to be the preferred pizza outlet there is and with our reasonable prices and free delivery services we are going to make a big impact.”

Not only does Scooters offer free delivery but you get your pizza for free if it is delivered after 39 minutes. The Pepper Grove Scooters Pizza now becomes the 28th Scooters Pizza to have the new look which was launched earlier this year.

How Scooters prepare their pizzas: • The order goes straight into the main system which can be controlled nationally.
• Special flour is put into the mixer which kneads it into balls of dough
• The balls are inserted into a roller which flattens it to your specification (a thick or flat base)
• A special tomato-based sauce is smeared on top to give it both moisture and taste
• The same amount of each ingredient is added, with an extra amount of cheese
• After the ingredients have been added, the unbaked pizza goes into a piping hot oven
• In no time the pizza is ready to be served

During delivery, the pizza is put into a heater bag, where it sustains its warmth until it reaches its  destination.

According to General Manager Renier Hattingh the delivery will cover the whole area of Grahamstown. “Scooters Pizza will reach anywhere in Grahamstown as it says in our map that gives us the proximity of our delivery and guides us on the directions of the area.”

The new franchisee Brett Stander, who got the inspiration from his family who owns a hotel in Boksburg, is excited about the opening.

“I am really excited and it will bring something new for the students and the entire community of  Grahamstown,” he said.
