IN the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, a 41-year-old Grahamstown resident pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing a pair of black children’s shoes valued at R59.99 at Pep Store on 11 December 2009.

She was given a suspended sentence of three years and a fine of R400 for two months. She is unemployed and has three children aged 19, 13 and five years old.

She also takes care of her husband’s disabled brother. Her husband works as a plumber for the municipality and he earns R3000 per month. She receives a social grant for her youngest child.

The court ruled that it is mindful that society is prejudiced by shoplifters and it is aware of the seriousness of the offense which is prevalent in this area.

It also took into account the  accused’s personal  circumstances and the fact that she pleaded guilty and showed remorse for her actions.

It also took into  consideration that this is her first offence. The court ruled that a suspended sentence is appropriate for this offense but warned that if the accused commits this crime again, she will not be let off easily.
