It is a great idea police personnel can get in the spirit of the World Cup and at the same time, (perhaps), lose a few inches.

Of course, it can be argued that they should not have gotten so out of shape in the first place, but let’s not labour the point.

Most of us believe we know what cops should be doing because we watch TV, or rather American TV where the men and women in blue are always running after bad guys, scampering up an obligatory fence in a skanky alleyway and then doing a running dive tackle.

They do all this and then still read the perp his Miranda without huffing and puffing. Yes, we hear you, only in Hollywood.

Some of our finest could maybe do that, but judging from the rolls wobbling around on the Great Field,  probably not too many.

We fully support police chief, General Bheki Cele in his determination to slim down the force. In fact, we have another idea that could help him in this direction, and save a considerable amount of money.

When police officers patrol the streets of Grahamstown instead of doing so in a vehicle they should rather use bicycles.

This would add to the fitness levels of officers, save on the fuel bill and cut air pollution. Most people in Grahamstown live and work within a five kilometre radius of the two police stations in town, so they wouldn’t have to cycle very far.

Of course not all police work can be done from a bicycle, but routine patrols on bicycles would enhance the visibility of the policemen and make them more effective. This would in turn, help the police win the other critically important battle fighting crime.
