A record number of entrants participated in the Spar Women’s 10km challenge and 5km fun run on Saturday at Kings Beach in Port Elizabeth.

A record number of entrants participated in the Spar Women’s 10km challenge and 5km fun run on Saturday at Kings Beach in Port Elizabeth.

This year’s event attracted 9 520 entrants, bettering last year’s entrants of 8 300. There were 1 072 finishers in the 10km event, while the bulk of the entrants took part in the 5km event. The 10km race attracted the top women runners from across the country.

The first local home was Terri-Lynn Penney (Run/ Walk For Life Athletics Club), finishing 21st in 41:01. She was followed by the Coppinger sisters, Christine and Jennifer of Rhodes University Athletics Club in 44:32.

Rene Kalmer notched up her 20th win in the Spar Women’s 10km series when she cruised to victory in 33 minutes and 53 seconds.

Irvette van Blerk was second in 34:7:3 seconds, followed by Nandipha Dywili in 34:44 seconds. “I love the PE race, I think it’s South Africa’s most beautiful race.
