A 19-year old woman was killed and her boyfriend left in a critical condition after their shack in Extension 6 caught alight last Saturday night.

Grocott’s Mail reporters who went to investigate, found a blackened mess with the fresh smell of charred furniture emanating from the burnt shack in which Ntombencinci Mzizi died.

A neighbour ran to put out the fire with water after hearing screams coming from the shack at 11pm.
Xolani Ngqina was pulled out of the shack and is now recovering in Dora Nginza hospital in Port Elizabeth.

He is still in a critical condition. Neighbours speculate that an overturned candle caused the fire. Warrant Officer Sherolene Williams said police were still conducting an inquest into the cause.

Williams said, “The police are concerned with fires occurring in informal settlements and we once again warn the community to be careful with heating equipment during the forthcoming winter.”
