The Rhodes University Archery team made their way to Pretoria for the South African National and All-African Continental Championships in April.
The team was put to the test when they shot in typical Gauteng thunderstorm weather conditions and pouring rain, but the Rhodes team still showed outstanding results.

Rhodes Archery Club member, Dave Martin, received high praise as the Continental Judge when he was asked to judge the 60th South African and Continental Archery Target Championships.
On the Saturday, which was the official practice day, archers had the opportunity to practice each distance they would shoot from 30m to 90m in each division.
It was also the Fita (Federation Internationale de Tir a l’arc/ International Federation of Archery) scoring round where archers shot in their individual divisions ranging from 30m, 50m, 60m, 70m, 90m.
Monday and Tuesday were the elimination rounds where archers shot for gold, silver and bronze. In the Standard Bow division archers had to shoot two rounds of 36 arrows, in sets of six, at 50m and two at 30m.
In the Standard Bow Mens division Rhodes cleared the field with Gregory Viljoen taking gold, Marc Jacquet winning silver and Darian Chinnappen taking the bronze.
The next day showed a turn when Marc Jacquet won a gold, Gregory Viljoen silver, and Darian Chinnappen taking bronze.
Standard Bow women saw Nicole Mesias taking gold and Chrizanne Bekker taking silver on both days.
Compound division was a bit more tricky.
The Cadet Compound division shot 36 arrows at each of the following distances: 70m, 60m, 50m and 30m. Gerrit Bosman won the bronze in the continental medal match on Tuesday, making him the third best cadet in Africa.
Simon Naudee took the silver in the Junior Compound division where they shot at Mens Compound distances, 90m, 70m, 50m and 30m.
The women’s compound team event showed interesting results when the Rhodes team went up against some of the top women’s teams in South Africa in rainy weather conditions.
Robyn Martin, Ettione Ferreira and Leanne Poole made up the womens compound Rhodes team and received the bronze medal.
