It was a double achievement when Tracey Chambers and her son Glynn graduated together from Rhodes University earlier this month.

Glynn obtained his Honours-level Diploma in Accounting while Tracey received her MBA degree. Glynn described the moment they both graduated as a special moment.

“Being a family of two, we were both over the moon to be on that stage together and I got goose bumps when she strolled across the stage to get capped.”

Glynn said that although he and his mother had one or two similar subjects, he jokes that she would “rarely put her pride in her pocket and admit defeat by asking me something that she didn’t know.” Tracey jokes that Glynn tried to help her with management accounting as she was “useless” at this.

Tracey is a single mother and a warden at Dingeman’s residence at Rhodes. She is also a Support  Manager at the Rhodes IT division. She said that it took a lot of juggling to be able to do all these things

while getting her degree. “Time management was essential. Glynn would say that I never fed him for three
years but he helped me a lot by taking care of himself and by being understanding.

I hope I have inspired some people and shown that it is possible to juggle various roles.” Glynn said he has seen how studying further has increased Tracey’s confidence in certain aspects.

“My mom never thought she could accomplish something like attaining a BComm degree and now she has an MBA so she has certainly surprised herself.”

Tracey said that she’s gained people skills, time management, perseverance and confidence  through her degree.

She plans to do a Certified Programme in Higher Education Management for now but her supervisor, Prof Chrissie Boughey, has encouraged her to get her PhD. Glynn is currently doing his articles and Board exams at KPMG in Cape Town to qualify as an auditor.
