POLICE are investigating two separate cases of assault reported at the police station in Beaufort Street over the weekend.

The first incident took place at Nikelo’s Tavern in Vukani township. Police said a 35-year-old man was stabbed twice in his back by his drunken friend.

A man was arrested on the crime scene and will appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court soon. In another incident a man was robbed and assaulted near Eric’s Tavern in Tantyi.

“The alleged assault happened after the victim refused to hand over his cellphone to the five unknown African males.

No arrest has been made,” said Inspector Strauss of the Crime Prevention Unit in Grahamstown. Tavern owner Xhalabile said their security staff do not do their jobs correctly.

However, tavern owner Ntlanjeni had a different view on this. “I want to congratulate my security personnel for the job well done.

The were no incidents reported from my tavern,” said the relieved Ntlanjeni. The Liquor Officer Captain Swarts said tavern owners are compelled to have security guards on their taverns according to the Liquor Act.

Ntela of the Liquor Board said the Grahamstown by-laws and Liquor Act must be respected.
