The South African Football Association (SAFA) Cacadu Absa Women’s Regional League continued this past weekend at JD Dlepu Stadium.

Defending champions, African Connections women’s football club hosted Alexandria Bay and AC Milan women on Saturday for the group A matches.

In the first match, log leaders  Connections played thirdplaced AC Milan in what was a spectacular start for the visitors, as they are fighting for a place in the second round.

Connections had most of the ball possession to themselves from the first half of the match. Milan hardly created any chances to score, as Connections tightened their backline while still asking questions upfront.

Connections used Milan’s shaky defence to their advantage and scored three goals making the final score three to African Connections and zero to AC Milan.

The goals were scored by Unathi Magcweka, Zikhona Dastile and Nwabisa Jafta. In their second match African Connections played Alexandria Bay women who are currently second behind log leaders Connection Ladies in Group A of the regional league.

Three minutes into the game, the skilful Unathi Magcweka put Connections in an early lead with a spectacular goal.

But that was not enough to satisfy the goal-hungry Magcweka, as she continued her goal-scoring spree by netting in another goal in the 14th minute,  stretching the lead to 2–0 to Connections.

Several attempts by the Alex side moving forward were stoped by the solid Connection’s defence. Despite gusts of wind, Connections maintained the 2–0 score until halftime.

The second half saw Alex producing attempts at goal and proving to be a threat. With 17 minutes into the second half 19 year old captain Asanda “Drogba” Guvuza redeemed her side by scoring, making it 2–1.

Another attempt by Alex nearly brought an equaliser, as a shot at goal narrowly missed the post. Eight
minutes before the final whistle Connections defender and left winger Lathiswa “Malatsi” Ntumni scored, putting Connections in a comfortable lead.

The match ended with African Connection winning 3-1. Connections now retain their number one position in the Group A of the SAFA Cacadu Absa Regional League with the past weekend’s wins.

The team has a very good record in the league under the strict guidance of their coach Chris Totobela. Totobela said “We started the game short of players, making everything difficult for us from the start but we used our powers and managed to come up with good results.

I am grateful of the results and I am not worried about anything concerning the team.” Totobela said that while he is happy with the results, he says the team did not play their best and believes that “there is room for  improvement”.
