A Queenstown man (36) appeared in the High Court in Grahamstown last week, charged with the rape of a 14-year-old mentally disabled girl who is also his cousin.

According to the indictment, the incident happened in Nomzamo township in Queenstown in May last year in the one-roomed home of the accused.

The victim lives with her grandmother in a house just a few metres away. According to police reports the girl was playing outside her grandmother’s house with other children when the accused lured her inside his house.

When her grandmother found that she was missing, the children directed her to the accused’s house where she found the door locked.

According to her  statement she banged on the door until it broke open and found her granddaughter and the accused on the floor.

Police were summoned but only arrived the next day to arrest him. He has been in prison since his arrest in May last year. The trial has been postponed until 27 May.
