Earth Hour takes place tomorrow and the questions looms will this year be as big as last year? Will Grahamstown commit to this global initiative?

Who will be in and who will be out? Pick ‘n Pay is in. Store manager Johan Pienaar says: “We participated last year and will be joining in on Earth Hour again this year.”

Checkers is in. Sales manager Werner Fischer said the time for Earth Hour (8.30pm to 9.30pm) clashes with the time the stores figures are processed and sent to the head office in Cape Town.

However, Fischer said “we will do it for a good cause” even if it means processing the figures after Earth Hour. The municipality is out.

Deputy Director of Technical Services Johnson Siteto said that on the whole “the municipality would not be switching off”, but on an individual level they would be participating.

Rhodes is out. Ashley Sanders of Rhodes Communication Division said that “nothing official is being done; we have added a link on the website, but we are leaving it up to individuals.”
