All the proceeds from the entrance fee were donated to the Rhodes Organisation for Animals Rights (Roar). The venue was jam-packed as partygoers crowded around the stage to embrace the band’s unique sound and infectious energy.
It was a successful fundraiser, with over 400 tickets sold and over R4 000 raised. Roar chairperson Matthew Muller explained that the management at the Union contacted the society and asked if its committee would like to man the entrance table.
The proceeds would then be donated to the society. As Malibu was responsible for bringing the Dirty Skirts to Grahamstown, Roar will receive all the proceeds.
Roar concerns itself with issues relating to local and international animal rights. The society holds talks, debates and events to raise awareness.
Its members are given the opportunity to help animals by volunteering at the local SPCA and holding fundraisers around Grahamstown and on campus.
Vice-chairperson Kathryn McConnachie said the proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards the society’s Animal Welfare Project.
This project runs various drives and supports local animal clinics.There is the Sponsor-a-Spay drive, which provides the fee to sterilise stray animals, and pets whose owners cannot afford this procedure.
Roar also supports the Makana and Ndlambe Donkey, Equine and Livestock Association, and raises funds and awareness for Grahamstown donkey owners to care for their donkeys.
The society is beginning to work with the Grahamstown Feral Cat Project, which focuses on sterilising stray cats in town and now on campus.
The Animal Welfare Project will also allocate funds to take care of veterinary bills in cases of animal cruelty.
