The Makana Brick 8km Nite Race took place through the streets of Grahamstown on Wednesday evening, with over 600 participants eager to receive their pineapple and medal for finishing.

Last year’s event saw a surprise visit by a number of Port Elizabeth athletes eagerly chasing the money. This year’s event was open to local athletes as there were no surprise visitors.

Showing that he is still the top runner in Grahamstown, Simphiwe Tana of PE’s Netbank Running Club, won the event in a time of 26 minutes and 48 seconds.

Patrick Mnto of Run/Walk For Life Athletics Club finished second in 27:27, after leading the race for the first few kilometres, while Melikhaya Jacobs (Nedbank) was third in 27:53.

Basie Bonaparte of the organising club Albany Road Runners was fourth in 28:38, followed by Carriot Galela (Run/Walk For Life) in 28:56.

Terri-Lynn Penney of Run/Walk For Life was the women’s winner in 33:38, followed by Natalie Ross (Rhodes University Athletics Club) in 34:36 and Jene Banfield (Run/Walk For Life) in 34:44.

The fourth woman home was Hiley Gourt (Rhodes) in 36:38, and fifth was Alex Adie (Rhodes) in 37:06.

The event was held in hot and very humid conditions, but this did not stop hundreds of residents taking part, whether it be running for time, running with friends,  walking with family, or pushing a pram. St Andrew’s College was again well supported with almost 300 entries.
