The driver who collided into three students in New Street outside the Rat and Parrot on Friday night was arrested on the scene and charged on two counts driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless and negligent driving.
The driver who collided into three students in New Street outside the Rat and Parrot on Friday night was arrested on the scene and charged on two counts driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless and negligent driving.
Two of the three students were taken to Settler’s Hospital, while the third was rushed off to Port Elizabeth to treat more severe injuries. He is in a stable condition in hospital.
The driver, who was travelling at high speedin a 60km zone at 11.30pm, sparked some comments about the speed at which he was driving.
“The speed that he was going at was unbelievable – he barely slowed down after he had hit the first girl. The only reason I was watching was because I could see he was doing about 50km/h faster than he should have been,” said a fourth year student who witnessed the accident.
Inspector Sherolene Williams reported that, “the driver, who is a Zimbabwean student, was given a breathalyser test at the scene of the accident and was released on bail. We are awaiting the blood test results and he will appear in court on 18 August.”
