Grahamstown’s favourite fun run, the Makana Brick 8km Nite Race, takes place on Wednesday 10 March from the Albany Sports Club.

Organised by Albany Road Runners, the 8km is once again sponsored by Makana Brick and takes participants through the streets of Grahamstown.

As is tradition with the event, each  finisher will receive a pineapple, as well as a finishers’ medal. Andrew Slaughter of Albany Road Runners said the race will accommodate disabled athletes once again this year as it did for the first time in 2009.

The overall men’s and women’s winners will each receive R300, R200 to second, R100 to third and R40 for fourth, while there will be many spot prizes up for grabs.

The race will start at 5.30pm and entries will be taken from the Albany Sports Club from 4.30pm. Entries will cost R10.

Last year the first man and woman to cros sthe finish line were George Ntsheleza in 25:15 and Ntombizinto Ntsheleza in 30:36, both from Port Elizabeth, each setting course records for the 8km.

The fastest time by a local man is 25:30 set by Simphiwe Tana in 2007 while the fastest time by a local woman is Terri-Lynn Penney’s 32:02 set at last year’s event.

Last year’s race attracted about 700 participants and Albany Road Runners donated proceeds from the race to the Sun City Nursery School and the Rotary Club who assisted with refreshments. Boerewors rolls and other refreshments will be on sale during and after the race.
