An amateur variety contest in the style of the popular reality show America’s Got Talent was held on campus on Monday evening.

Has Rhodes got Talent? was organised by Dean of Students Prof Vivian de Klerk and the Student Representative Council (SRC) andwas launched at Rhodes’ Anti Alcohol-abuse Week.

Twentytwo student acts signed up to perform and judging the competition was De Klerk, SRC president Eric Ofei, and director of Ubom!

Eastern Cape Drama Company Janet Buckland. It was an entertaining evening, with some contestants performing covers of popular songs and others especially the dancers and beat-boxers  using their opportunity on stage to have fun and please the crowd.

Some guitarists performed their own pieces and one contestant even sang in Japanese. The lively crowd loudly expressed their  enthusiasm  not hesitating to snap their fingers to the music and cheer ing for their friends.

There were supposed to be four finalists chosen, but six acts were chosen to go through to the final of Viv’s Variety Show, the closing event of Anti Alcohol-abuse Week.

The finalists include three singers, a performance poet, a guitarist, and a singer-guitarist duo. These acts will perform alonside other entertainment that will include the Rhodes Chamber Choir and a vuvuzela ensemble.

Speaking about the competition, Ofei explained that the SRC is trying to promote the responsible use of alcohol consumption.

“We are trying to show people that you can have fun without drinking.” De Klerk explained to the packed lecture theatre the intention of Anti Alcoholabuse Week.

“It is against alcohol abuse, not alcohol.” She added, “We can all have good memories without getting motherlessly drunk.” Viv’s Variety Show will start at 7pm tonight at the Guy Butler Theatre at the Settlers Monument. Tickets cost R5 and are available from the Dean of Students Office.
