The mayoral committee meeting of August 2009 resolved that as from September directors should submit action sheets to meetings of their portfolio committees and the mayoral committee. This is done in order for the committees to monitor any actions taken by municipal officials in implementing the resolutions implemented by the mayoral committee.

The mayoral committee further resolved that a standard action sheet be developed for this purpose for use by all the five directors in the municipality.

The mayoral committee also resolved to suspend grazing fees paid by farmers in Riebeeck East and Ward 3 councillor Zamuxolo Peter was requested to compile a list of affected farmers.

However, social services director Mandisi Planga reported to the social services portfolio committee on Thursday that by January the municipality’s Park and Recreation department had not received the list from Peter.

Planga also reported that a memorial for the bones which were excavated in KwaNdancama will be unveiled at an official ceremony which is yet to be scheduled by the municipality’s Cemeteries Task Team.

The municipality is considering a request from Grahamstown stockowners for additional land on the Southern Conserv ancy which it received in November.

Planga said that a follow up report will be submitted to the Portfolio Committee in February. The mayoral committee resolved in November that a workshop be arranged to outline the responsibilities of ward councillors concerning complaints about liqour outlets in their wards.

“A workshop will be organised,” Planga promised on Thursday. He added that the issue will be discussed at the next meeting of the Liqour Control Consultative Forum but that a date for such a meeting has not yet been set.

The mayoral committee meeting in December turned down the municipality’s request for the inclusion of a disaster management post in the municipality.

The mayoral committee also asked for a report on how other municipalities run their disaster management departments. Planga reported on Thursday that Cacadu District Municipality assigned disaster officers to most local municipalities, except Kouga Municipality which has its own.

In November the mayoral committee resolved that written submissions on the functioning of the Church Square traffic lights be invited from the public.

“The traffic department is observing the functioning of the traffic lights,” Planga reported on Thursday. “A report will be submitted at the February portfolio committee meeting.”

Makana’s director of economic development, Riana Meiring said a third lane will be re-introduced in High Street front of Truworths to ease traffic flow.

Responding to a question from a councillor, Meiring saidshe does not know when the robots in Raglan Road will be switched on.
