In the article the SRC expressed their concerns about the magnitude of the Haiti earthquake which has been described by some as the greatest disaster in recent history and noted that they needed to be part of the
solution to help the citizens of Haiti.
As part of the Orientation Week programme, the SRC planned on collecting funds to contribute to the relief action by having collection points at all the SRC events, but when Orientation Week drew to a close and no money had been collected heads were hung in shame.
With funds due to be donated to one of the largest disaster relief organisations of African origin, the Gift of the Givers organisation, the SRC say they are saddened by the students’ apathy towards the cause.
“We haven’t raised any money so far, but hopefully at the final event where we will be selling boerewors rolls students will have small change on them and be more likely to contribute,” said SRC International
Councillor, Chipo Hamukoma on Thursday last week.
On the final day of Orientation Week a mere R150 had been raised. “Some money is better than none but it’s disappointing when students seem to be able to afford a drink out at night, but can’t spare any change for a good cause.
As the SRC we are looking at more ways to raise money,” said Hamukoma. Meanwhile, the chairman and founder of the Gift of the Givers Organisation, Dr Imitiaz Ismail Sooliman gracefully expressed that he was appreciative of every effort – no matter how small.
