The ANC celebrated its birthday in style when it recommitted itself to the fulfillment of the promises it
made in the build-up to the recent general elections.
Acting Ward 12 chairperson Likhaya Ngqezana told a packed Tantyi Hall that they are celebrating the party’s 98th anniversary and the 55th anniversary of the Freedom Charter.
The ANC celebrated its birthday in style when it recommitted itself to the fulfillment of the promises it
made in the build-up to the recent general elections.
Acting Ward 12 chairperson Likhaya Ngqezana told a packed Tantyi Hall that they are celebrating the party’s 98th anniversary and the 55th anniversary of the Freedom Charter.
“The Freedom Charter is an important documents which proclaimed that the country belongs to all who live in it,” he said. He urged party members to be aware of the critical factors facing the evolution of their movement.
Former Makana councillor Johnson Booi who recently left the party to join the Democratic Aliance (DA) was paraded in front of the crowd like a naughty schoolboy.
Ngqezana said he had personally convinced the elder to come back to his political home and Booi was wrapped in an ANC blanket and an ANC cap was put on his head. “I invite all our comrades, the old guard,
who went to join Cope [Congress of the People] to come back to the family,” he said.
However, DA secretary Xolani Madyo said the party has not received any resignation letter from Booi
and that it still regarded him as a paid-up member of the organisation.
“He attended our branch meeting on Wednesday last week so I don’t know anything about his resignation,” he said. While Booi confirmed being paraded at the celebrations he denied rejoining the ruling party.
He said he attended because he was invited as a community elder, and that he was shocked when it was announced that “I had come home and was compared to the prodigal son of the biblical times”.
He said the standing ovation which he received at the meeting showed that the Tantyi community still
has confidence in him despite his departure from the ANC.
“I urge the residents to continue showing their confidence in me as I will be available for election in the
upcoming local government elections,” he added.
