Over 230 vehicles have been through the doors of Grahamstown Autoguard to have the Vehicle Protection Shield (VPS) placed on various parts of the vehicle.
VPS is a eurothane film which is placed on the vehicle to protect the body from scratches, dents and chips. Johannes Campher of Grahamstown Autoguard, who has been in the business for two years, says that the VPS works best when it is placed on new vehicles or on completely undamaged areas.
The film arrives at Grahamstown Autoguard in rolls of 37 metres by 1.2 metres. To get the exact length
and shape of the vehicle, his team uses tracing paper to trace the shape of the area which requires covering, then tracing it onto compressed polystyrene.
The polystyrene is then sanded to smoothen it before being placed on the film which is then cut out. The sticky film is then sprayed with soapy water and placed onto the vehicle.
Once the correct position is found, the film dries and sticks to the body and light covers of the vehicle.
Campher adds that if the owner chooses to sell the vehicle afterwards, the film iseasy to remove without affectingthe paintwork leaving the body looking as good as new with no scratches or chips.
Campher says the person who goes for VPS is anyone who buys a new vehicle and drives it in the open road “as chips happen during trips”.
He has received requests for a small piece of VPS wrapped against the edges of the car door to prevent it
scratching if it is accidentally bumped against the garage wall, as well as the complete sides of 4×4 vehicles for offroad travelling.
