Police have opened a case of negligent driving after a woman driving a BMW down Bathurst street hit a pedestrian late on Tuesday afternoon.

The pedestrian, Vuyisile Nuku had a narrow escape after he was hit while crossing the road between Connocks Butchery and the Baptist Church.

An eye witness said: "We were crossing the road together, I did not see the car when it hit him, the only thing I heard was a loud bang. I saw Shuta (Nuku) in the air.

I’ve never seen anything like that before." Another eye witness, who is known to <itals>Grocott’s Mail<end itals> but who preferred to remain anonymous said: "The guy was right in front of me.

I was about to cross the road when I saw the BMW coming towards us at high speed. I quickly stopped but the accident victim was already trying to cross. The car hit him so hard he flew up in the air and hit the ground."

Angela Knowles, the driver of the BMW told <itals>Grocott’s Mail<end itals> that she was on her way home from work when the accident happened. "He jumped in front of my car, I tried to swerve to the right but I hit him. I have never hit anyone before, not even an animal.

I thought he was dead," said the visibly distraught Knowles. When <itals>Grocott’s Mail<end itals> arrived on the scene Nuku was lying motionless, surrounded by a group of people.

Paramedics arrived and took him to Settlers Hospital where he was treated for a head wound. The BMW had a dent on the right bumper and cracks on the windscreen.
