Once again the time for festivities has come, the time where the majority of workplaces are closing for the summer holidays.

It is the time in which workers take summer vacation to be with their families. It is of course also the time where schools have closed down and most learners have received their end of the year results or are waiting anxiously for them, the most affected being the Grade 12 learners who have just completed their matric examinations. All of us are in anticipation of good results for our Grade 12s.
It is the period in which we see traditional festivities, weddings and a season where a number of initiates undergo traditional passage to manhood.
At the initiates’ home coming celebrations, (imigidi) where animals are slaughtered and alcohol features prominently, we should learn to limit high alcohol consumption.
Instead of alcohol being at the forefront, we should rather think about giving gifts such as consumables and other commodities.
It is a season where migration from inland to the coastal areas takes place and there is an increase in travel especially on the roads. It is for that reason that we must strongly advocate the Arrive Alive Campaign to minimise fatalities.
I am sure you are all aware that South Africa is a water scarce country, our regions and towns included. Your commitment to saving water would promote the notion of "water is life.”
The economic downturn that seems to be negatively affecting the relationship between employer and employee, bread winner and family have begun to expose the resilience of our value system.
Ubuntu is being tested by the growing poverty level and inequality, but we cannot despair and shed what makes our inner selves to be what we are. This is a season to give, and to appreciate our families, neighbors and friends alike, but most importantly to take care of the vulnerable. As we celebrate the festive season, I wish you all a good festive season full of life.
