The existing parts of Rhodes University’s library which are being refurbished are scheduled to be completed by 18 December.

Meanwhile the construction of a new wing to the library will be complete by mid-January. Jeanne Berger, the Rhodes Main Library head of collections and technical services said the existing library will be kept functional until the new wing is complete.

She also said that the old entrance will be closed and a new entrance will be opened next to the refurbished, existing part of the library. The R90-million expansion of the Rhodes Library was given the green light by the Rhodes University Council after a two-and-a-half year assessment.

The new library will be double in size which will create more space for library resources. The three-phase building project is still under way as construction workers are busy breaking down part of the existing wall opposite the library for the expansion.
