During the course of this year a number of young learners from Victoria Primary School and Graeme College have joined the Cathedral Choir as choristers.

The aim is to establish a choir school at the Cathedral around learners from Victoria Primary School and Graeme College. To date, there are ten girls from VG and seven boys from Graeme who have added their voices to the choir. Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and Archbishop Thabo are patrons of the choir school.

By the beginning of the next school year in January twenty students will have enrolled on the chorister training programme run by Barbara Stout, the Cathedral’s director of music, and will be leading the worship along with the adult members of the choir. The laerners are all between the ages of nine and 12 years and in return for their commitment their schools fees and instrumental fees will be paid through a fund established at the Cathedral.

Each week the choristers receive vocal training at the respective schools and at a special practise prior to the main choir practice on Wednesdays. A trust fund is currently being established to raise funds to support not only the Choir School but also to provide a long term, sustainable financial future for the music ministry of the Cathedral.

If anyone wishes to obtain further information please contact Wilf Stout, the Cathedral organist, by email wilf.stout@googlemail.com or by phone 046 622 5538. The Cathedral Choir can be heard singing this Sunday, 29 November, at the Advent Carol Service at 7pm in the Cathedral.
