Two stores in High Street were robbed within three days of each other last week.

In the first reported case, two suspects allegedly broke into Lewis stores around 9am on Monday evening, stealing a plasma screen television valued at R13 000. According to store manager Sandra Beer, entry was gained by breaking open the side door with a concrete brick.

A Hi-Tec security officer said that the alarm went off at about 9:05am and four security personnel were dispatched to the crime scene. Meanwhile two residents who live nearby saw the two thieves running from the store and quickly phoned Hi-Tec.

They were subsequently nabbed near Clicks with the stolen television still in their posession and the police were contacted. Beer wishes to thank the public and Hi-Tec Security for responding so quickly. Beer has opened a case with the police.

On Thursday around 2pm two men entered Legit Stores pretending to be customers and made off with seven cellphones. At the time of the robbery there was only security officer Cynthia Mzizi and the one cashier on the floor and several customers in the store.

According to Mzizi, the suspects entered the store and went straight to the cellphone section where they stood looking at the cellphone display. When the cashier asked if she could help them they said they were just looking. Because she was busy organising stock that day, the cashier was climbing up and down a step ladder and had her back to the customers a lot of the time.

However, Mzizi said that she noticed that something was not quite right and called the cashier to check the cellphone display. When she noticed that the cellphone display had been opened and a few cellphones were missing the cashier asked Mzizi to close the doors. Mzizi managed to close one door but the suspects pushed past her and ran off. A case has been opened and no arrests have been made thus far.
