First City Regiment recently held phase one of its Gold Cup shooting competition, which took place at the Military Base shooting range.

Four Eastern Cape regiments, Prince Alfred Guard, First City, Buffalo Volunteer Rifles and Regiment Piet Retief, took part in the shoot. Each unit was represented by 20 shottists, with the top eight shottists in each regiment been selected for the next round of the competition, which takes place at the end of March 2010, either in Bloemfontein or Pretoria (the final venue is still to be confirmed).

 In conjunction with the Gold Cup was the Table Two Shoot which soldiers qualify for badges. This shoot takes place at least twice a year, with the soldiers needing to practice throughout the year. Andrew Stanley, warrant officer at First City, said they will hold a training camp for the top eight First City members who qualified for the Gold Cup, which sees each unit in the country sending a team.

The following members of First City qualified for the Gold Cup in March 2010 (the shoot included a 100 metre snap, 100m rapid, 200m app, 200m snap, 300m app, 400 to 100m run):

Corporal Johan Viljoen (total score of 251), Lieutenant colonel Frikkie Greeff (232), Francois Groenewald (217), Lieutenant Francois Marais (213), Rifleman Estelle Viljoen (204), Captain Allen Truter (202) and Rifleman Quinton Muller (183).
