Matric exams have been in progress for three weeks now and so far there have been no major glitches, according to Grahamstown learners and principals.

Madeleine Schoeman, the principal of Victoria Girls’ High School said that exams are going according to plan and that the co-operation from the district department of education has been much appreciated.

Bulelwa Mgqobele, a matric learner at Mary Waters High School said that although exams have been really tough, everything in the exam papers had been covered in class during the year. "You must be prepared and work really hard to pass these exams," she said.

Lukhanyo Kepe from Graeme College said that the exams are going really well and according to his expectations. He also said that his teachers did a really good job of preparing the matriculants for the exams.

Luyanda Ntulini from Nombulelo High School said that the exams are tough because sometimes you find that certain questions are based on material that has not been covered in class. Nokuzola Peter, also from Nombulelo, said that she struggled with the Physical Sciences exam which was really difficult, other than that the exams have been good so far. Another learner from Nombulelo said that she did not expect to pass Physics because at some point during the year they did not have a Physics teacher as their teacher Les Mitchell left to take up a post at Fort Hare University.

Nombulelo principal, Mthuthuzeli Koliti said that it is true that the school had lost two teachers this year including Mvula Goba who passed away earlier this year.

However, it is not true that the learners went without a teacher. He said that another Physics teacher at the school took over Mitchell’s classes when he left while Rhodes University staff and students conducted afternoon classes with the Grade 12 Economics learners until a teacher was appointed in October. All in all he said that exams were going smoothly so far in terms of administration.
