Makana Brick A won the 2009 version of the Albany Night Bowls tournament, which was hosted by the Albany Bowling Club.

The event, sponsored by Pick n Pay, started at the beginning of October and the 30 teams were split into three groups, the Tuesday group, Wednesday group and Thursday group.

Makana Brick entered three teams in the tournament, with all three teams making it through to Friday nights final games. The winning A team was made up of Melton Kivitts, Wanda Che, Justin Louw and Lance Ramoo.

After four weeks of round robin games, the top four teams took part in the finals, which were held on Friday evening.

Teams received points from each of their matches. Points were gained from winning the game as well as for the team winning the most ends.

These points were added up to select teams for the finals, and the points were carried over to the finals. After the finals, the team with the most points were the overall tournament winners.

Makana Brick A beat Dup Meyer Builders and were announced as the trophy winners at a prizegiving function.

D Generation X, made up of Mario and Natasha Agnew, Esmeralda Oosthuizen and Nolan de Maar, finished in second spot after beating Makana Brick C. Mardon Bros, who beat Pick n Pay, finished in third spot, with Dup Meyer Builders finishing in fourth.

Organiser of the Albany Night Bowls, Gwen Bartlett, said the finals went off very well and there were lots of spectators throughout the evening.

Bartlett said all the final matches were very close, and before the evening started, any of the top six sides could have won the trophy. Last year’s event was won by Mardon Bros A.
