Makana Spears basketball player, Luthabile Gqeke is currently taking part in a two week scholarship at Durban High School.

Gqeke was part of the Makana Spears basketball side which took part in the Durban High School International High Schools Basketball Tournament earlier this year.

At this year’s tournament, Joachim Rodgriquez, the tournament director and an ex-South African basketball player, selected Gqeke as the most promising player at the tournament.

The prize was a scholarship of two weeks’ tuition at Durban High School with first team practices and games.

Makana Spears is a transformational basketball club in Grahamstown and was founded by Phil Rendel and Tisco Mati.

Rendele, who is currently based in Cape Town but still keeps in touch with the basketball club, said that Gqeke is the first player from the Eastern Cape to win the scholarship.

A student at the East Cape Midlands College in Grahamstown, Gqeke said he felt really good about being offerend this scholarship, adding that he had been waiting for this type of opportunity for a long time.

He believes he will improve his skills during the two weeks with the Durban High School basketball team and will bring to the Makana Spears club what he has learnt.

Gqeke got hooked on basketball in 2002 when he watched a local game taking place in Joza and it was soon after this that he began playing for the Makana Spears junior side while still a Grade 7 pupil at St Mary’s.

He has since been part of the Eastern Province team on two separate occasional during the South African trials.

He hopes to play for the Makana Spears senior side in 2010 and one day hopes to be selected for the national side.

DHS is the premier basketball high school in South Africa. It produces a stream of national players year after year and always wins its own tournament.

“With this level of experience under his belt, Thabile is likely to be selected for top level varsity teams,” said Rendel.
